Prioritizing Peace and joy during chaos

2 min read

Dear Black Women,

I don’t know why it continuously has to be told to us, but I too have to hear it often: you deserve rest.

I’m not talking about a day where you take off your shoes and eat popcorn and binge watch your favorite shows while you’re still tuned into the happenings of everything going on around you. I mean a sacred rest. I mean time where you truly unplug, let go, eject from and become completely oblivious to everything going on around you for the refueling and replenishment of your mind, body, spirit and soul.

For far too long, we have been the mules of the frontlines of everyone’s cause but when will people be the mules for us?

For too long we know that the most disrespected person in America is the black woman.

We see it in the continuous attack on us in music, the underpay in our work, the overlook in our value in the home. The denial of our femininity and softness, and the continuous argument against black women for placing values and standards on what they will and won’t allow in their lives.

Let’s normalize ejecting ourselves from the narratives placed before us and imagining what the world will look like without us “saving” everything. For far too long Black women have fixed and made suggestions and advised how things should be done, but rarely do you see women in positions of power and paid adequately for their input.

Let’s prioritize resting in the midst of chaos and turmoil because real revolutionary change doesn’t happen overnight. And in order to present and show up as our best self we’ll have to be fully present. In a society that wages wars against us, that roots a guilt within us so deep for choosing to REST when we are tired and weary, we should defy the feeling to keep pushing forward and press eject and pause, if only for a moment to sacredly regroup, collect and reflect on the power within.
