What Lo is Reading | January 2025

2 min read

Happy New Year, y’all! I hope the year is off to a great start… for me? It’s slow.. just how I like it. I don’t like things to ramp up until sometime around March, if I’m honest! Anyway…

Y’all, I’m deep in my reading right now. January might be giving ya’ll the winter blues, but here in Cali, nothing beats grabbing a good book, opening the blinds, and drifting off into a fictional world away from reality.

This month, I’m diving into Emma Cline’s world. If you haven’t heard of her yet, she’s the author of The Girls, and I’m about to devour not one but TWO of her books this month.

First up: The Guest. This deliciously twisted summer story follows a woman trying to survive in the Hamptons for a week. Think social climbing, desperation, and the kind of tension that makes you want to read it in one sitting. It’s basically what would happen if Succession met The Talented Mr. Ripley, but make it 2025.

Next on my list is Daddy, Cline’s collection of short stories that explores complicated character studies. Each story is supposed to be this perfect little snapshot of power dynamics and relationships gone wrong. I mean, who doesn’t love a good psychological deep dive?

And because I’m feeling nostalgic, I’m re-reading The Girls. If you missed it during its cultural moment, it’s this haunting story loosely based on the Manson cult but through the eyes of a teenage girl. The way Cline writes about girlhood and obsession? Absolutely unmatched.

Seriously– I’ve been thinking about how much more fun reading is when you can discuss every detail with friends. So here’s what I’m thinking… would y’all be interested in starting a little book club together? Nothing too serious – just vibes, good books, and maybe some wine on a monthly video chat?

Drop a comment below if you’re into it! We could do monthly virtual meetups, share our thoughts, and maybe even vote on the next book together. Looking forward to hearing what y’all think, and tell me what you’re reading this month – I’m always looking to add to my never-ending TBR pile.
